MYTH (1990) Series of 6 images.
Overall size (mounted) 22" x 21"
B/W selenium toned, multi- imaged photographic prints.
This work explores the complex issues of gender, aging, and sexuality.
Drawing on the archetypal Greek characters, Aphrodite, Apollo,
Leda, Poseidon and Crone, the multi - imagery invites the viewer
to reflect on the effects of Greek mythology on our contemporary
lives.
ECHOES (1992) 6 - 10 images framed.
Overall size (mounted) 21" x 23"
B/W selenium toned, multi- imaged photographic prints.
This work was made after photographing Greek statues at the Ashmolian
Cast Gallery, Oxford. Characters from Greek myth such as Niobe,
Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite and Hercules stand in close proximity
to each other, like people on a beach, each imbued with their
particular narrative. After making the initial photos, multi
- imaging techniques were applied in the dark room, to create
fresh juxtapositions, rewriting the narratives for our contemporary
times. The theme of human error, vulnerability and confusion
is overlaid with a gentle irony.
FATHER'S SON (1993) 4 images framed.
Overall size 21" x 19"
B/W selenium toned, multi- imaged prints.
Working now with a live model instead of ancient statues, the
emphasis is on human form, frozen, fragmented, statuesque. The
overlay is intended to evoke a sense of vulnerability and mortality.
A metamorphosis of flesh and stone.
FISH WOMAN (1994) 3 images. Mounted
in perspex. Overall size 33" x 45"
Multi- imaged B/w photographs. A portrayal of woman's powerful
sexuality and desire but also the influence of mythic woman on
her sense of self. The fishy overlay gives a sense of woman,
part wild, part human, gliding underwater.
ICARUS (1995) 4 images. Foam board
mounted. Overall size 33" x 33"
Digital prints. Archival.
Icarus, the Greek character who, tempted by the wonder of flight,
flew too near to the sun and fell to his death in the sea below.
The bird-like overlay disorientates our understanding. The man
dancing seems as man floating, flying, falling, expressing the
conflict between power and attainment, of strength but subsequent
vulnerability
CONSUMING PASSION (1996) C type
colour prints. Print size
This work was made for
an exhibition in September 1996 at the Lan Kwai Fong Gallery
in Hong Kong. It grew from memories of a previous visit to Hong
Kong and draws on themes of materialalism, artifice and the synthethic.
Impressions gained then have surfaced in these constructed tableaux.
We all indulge in consumerism,
and in these highly coloured images, the kitsch shopping bag
symbolizes the shopperholic. Fish and flowers become mere commodities,
and are placed in gaudy, theatrical settings which hint at glamour
and luxury.
The images are constructed
within picture frames, built like miniature stage sets; fabrics
and papers are used to suggest landscape or interiors; superficially
they are humorous, even trivial, but there are sinister overtones. There
is an element of the surreal. Composition is often simplistic,
almost naive. They are both bizarre and banal. The intention
is to play with the viewer's expectations of the photograph,
merging the boundaries between early still life painting and
modern advertising photography.
